The Challenge

A homeowner in Bushey had commissioned a landscape architect to redesign their rear garden. The design required six existing tree stumps to be removed — ranging from 300mm to 900mm in diameter — to make way for a new patio, raised beds, and a lawn. Two of the stumps were from conifers removed years ago and had extensive surface root networks that were lifting paving slabs. The landscape architect needed all stumps ground to at least 200mm below ground level to allow for the new hard landscaping.

Our Solution

We used our tracked stump grinder for the four larger stumps and a pedestrian machine for the two smaller ones in tighter spots near the boundary fence. Each stump was ground to 250mm below ground level — exceeding the 200mm specification to give the landscaper a comfortable margin. The surface roots from the two conifers were traced and ground out along their length where they ran under the proposed patio area. All grindings were mixed with topsoil and used to backfill the holes.

The Result

All six stumps were cleared in a single day. The landscape architect was able to begin the hard landscaping phase immediately the following week without any delays. Using the grindings as backfill saved the client the cost of buying in additional topsoil, and the mixed material will break down over the next couple of years, enriching the soil in the new raised beds.
