Stump Grinding & Removal
Complete stump removal using professional grinding equipment for domestic properties.
Professional Stump Grinding Services
After a tree has been felled, the remaining stump can be an eyesore, a trip hazard, and an obstacle that prevents you from using your garden as you'd like. Left in the ground, stumps can also produce unwanted re-growth, attract honey fungus, and make it impossible to mow, plant, or pave over the area. Stump grinding is the most effective way to remove a stump completely, and we carry out this work across Hertfordshire and North London every week — from single back-garden stumps through to multiple sycamore stumps on driveway reinstatements.
The Stump Grinding Process
Stump grinding is a mechanical process that uses a specialist machine fitted with a rotating cutting wheel to chip away at the stump and its major surface roots. Here's how we approach every job:
Preparation
Before grinding begins, we clear the area around the stump of any loose debris, stones, and soil that could damage the cutting teeth or be thrown by the machine. We also check for underground services — water pipes, gas mains, electric cables, and drainage runs — that could be in the path of the grinder. If there's any doubt, we use a cable avoidance tool (CAT scanner) to locate buried services before we start.
Grinding
The grinder is positioned over the stump and the cutting wheel is lowered onto the wood, sweeping side to side to chip away material in layers. We work systematically across the entire stump and its buttress roots, gradually reducing it to a level well below ground. The process is relatively quick — most domestic stumps take between 15 minutes and an hour, depending on size and species.
Depth
Our standard grind goes 15–30cm below ground level. This is sufficient for most garden purposes, including laying turf, planting beds, or creating a level new tree. If you have specific plans for the area — such as laying paving, building a base for a shed, or planting a new tree in the same spot — let us know and we'll grind to the appropriate depth. We also often grind stumps immediately after a tree felling so the ground is cleared in a single visit.
Equipment We Use
We operate a range of stump grinding machines to suit different site conditions:
Full-Size Tracked Grinder
Our primary machine is a powerful tracked stump grinder that can handle stumps of any size, including large hardwood species like oak and beech. It's self-propelled and can access most gardens through a standard side gate (minimum 75cm width).
Pedestrian Grinder
For sites with very restricted access — narrow passageways, steps, or rear gardens that can only be reached through the house — we use a compact pedestrian grinder that can be manoeuvred through tight spaces. It's smaller but still powerful enough to deal with most domestic stumps.
Hand Tools
Occasionally, for very small stumps or stumps in extremely confined spaces (such as raised planters or right against a building), we may use hand tools to excavate and remove the stump rather than grinding. We'll advise on the best approach during the quoting visit.
What Happens Afterwards
After grinding, you're left with a hole filled with a mixture of wood chips and soil. You have several options:
- Leave the grindings as mulch — the wood chip material makes excellent organic mulch for surrounding beds. It will decompose naturally over 12–18 months.
- Backfill with topsoil — if you want to turf or plant over the area straight away, we recommend removing the bulk of the grindings and backfilling with fresh topsoil.
- We remove everything — if you'd prefer a completely clear site, we take away all the grindings and can supply topsoil to fill the hole.
The grindings will settle as they decompose, so if you're turfing over the area, expect to need a top-up of soil after a few months.
Why Remove a Stump?
Beyond the obvious aesthetic reasons, there are several practical benefits to removing a stump:
- Prevents re-growth — many species, particularly sycamore, willow, and poplar, will produce vigorous shoots from a remaining stump, creating an ongoing maintenance problem
- Eliminates honey fungus risk — decaying stumps are a prime habitat for honey fungus (Armillaria), a destructive pathogen that can spread to healthy trees and shrubs nearby
- Frees up space — once the stump is gone, you can turf, plant, pave, or build over the area
- Removes trip hazards — old stumps become increasingly hidden as grass and weeds grow over them, creating a fall risk
Safety and Insurance
Stump grinders are powerful machines with exposed cutting teeth that rotate at high speed. Our operators are fully trained in their use and follow strict safety procedures, including establishing an exclusion zone around the machine during operation. We carry public liability insurance covering all stump grinding work.
