Wood Chippings

Quality wood chippings for garden mulch, paths, and landscaping from our tree work.

Quality Wood Chippings From Local Tree Work

Every tree we fell, every branch we prune, and every hedge we trim produces material that needs to go somewhere. Rather than sending it to landfill, we process it into wood chippings — a genuinely useful by-product that benefits gardens across Hertfordshire and North London. Most weeks our tippers are running chippings out to allotments and back gardens across our service area.

Our industrial chippers turn fresh branchwood into consistent, medium-grade wood chip on site during every job. This material is then available for delivery to domestic customers who want an affordable, natural, and sustainable mulch for their gardens.

How Our Chippings Are Produced

We use professional-grade drum and disc chippers that process branches up to 20cm in diameter. The result is a coarse, irregular chip — not the uniform, dyed material you'd find bagged at a garden centre, but the real thing. Our chippings are a natural mix of wood, bark, and leaf material from whatever species we've been working with — most commonly oak, ash, beech, sycamore, birch, and the various garden trees found across our service area. The material is produced directly from our tree felling and hedge trimming work.

Because we're producing chippings every day as part of our tree surgery operations, we always have stock available and can usually arrange delivery within a few days of your order.

Uses for Wood Chippings

Garden Mulch

The most popular use. A 7–10cm layer of wood chip around trees, shrubs, and in borders delivers multiple benefits:

  • Weed suppression — blocks light to the soil surface, dramatically reducing weed germination
  • Moisture retention — reduces evaporation from the soil by up to 70%, meaning less watering during dry spells
  • Temperature regulation — insulates soil against extreme heat and cold, protecting root systems
  • Soil improvement — as the chippings break down over 2–3 years, they add organic matter and improve soil structure
  • Earthworm activity — wood chip mulch encourages earthworm populations, which further improves soil health

Garden Paths and Walkways

Wood chippings make excellent informal garden paths. They're comfortable underfoot, free-draining, and blend naturally into the landscape. Laid at 10–15cm depth over a weed membrane, a wood chip path will last 2–3 years before needing a top-up. Far more affordable than gravel or paving, and much kinder on the knees.

Play Areas

Wood chip is one of the most common surfaces for domestic play areas. It provides impact-absorbing cushioning under swings, climbing frames, and slides. For safety compliance, a minimum depth of 30cm is recommended under play equipment with a fall height above 60cm. Our chippings are ideal for this purpose — natural, non-toxic, and easy to top up.

Composting and Soil Building

Mixed with green waste (grass clippings, kitchen scraps, fresh plant material), wood chippings provide the carbon-rich "brown" component that a healthy compost heap needs. The coarse texture also improves aeration within the compost pile, speeding up decomposition.

Decorative Ground Cover

Around the base of trees, along fence lines, or in areas where grass struggles to grow, a layer of wood chip provides a neat, natural finish that requires virtually no maintenance.

The Environmental Angle

Choosing our wood chippings means choosing a genuinely circular product. The material comes from necessary tree work — trees that needed to be felled, branches that required pruning, hedges that had to be cut. Instead of this material being transported to commercial green waste facilities (burning diesel in the process), it goes directly from site to your garden.

It's local, it's natural, it's unprocessed, and it's keeping organic material in productive use rather than sending it to decompose in a municipal facility. Every load of chippings we deliver is material that would otherwise add to our disposal costs — which is why we can offer it at such competitive rates.

Delivery

We deliver wood chippings across our full service area using our fleet of tipper trucks. A standard delivery is approximately 3–4 cubic metres — enough to mulch a significant area of garden. For larger projects, we can deliver multiple loads.

We need reasonable vehicle access — our trucks are 7.5 tonnes and approximately 7 metres long. If you have a driveway or hardstanding area near where you want the chippings, we can tip directly. Otherwise, we can tip on the road and you'll need to barrow them to their final position.

Delivery is usually available within a few days of ordering. During busy periods in autumn and winter (our peak felling season), chippings are particularly abundant and delivery can often be arranged within 24–48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are your wood chippings made from?
Our chippings are produced on site during our tree surgery work across Hertfordshire and North London. Branches and branchwood are fed through our industrial chipper, producing fresh wood chip from a mix of species — typically including oak, ash, beech, sycamore, birch, and whatever we've been working with that week. We don't add any chemicals or dyes.
How much do wood chippings cost?
We deliver wood chippings by the load. A standard load (approximately 3–4 cubic metres, enough to cover around 30–40 square metres at 10cm depth) is typically £60–£100 depending on your location and access. Because chippings are a by-product of our tree work, we can often offer very competitive rates. Contact us for a delivery quote.
Will wood chippings attract pests or cause problems?
No. Fresh wood chippings used as surface mulch do not cause pest problems or plant disease. The common concern that wood chip 'robs nitrogen from the soil' only applies if chips are dug into the soil — when used as a surface mulch (which is how we recommend using them), they don't affect soil nitrogen levels. They actually suppress weeds, retain moisture, and improve soil health as they break down.
Can I choose what type of wood the chippings are from?
Because our chippings come from whatever trees we're working on at the time, the mix varies week to week. We can't guarantee a single species, but we can let you know what's currently available. If you need a specific type — for example, a softwood-free mix for play areas — let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate.
How deep should I spread wood chippings?
For mulching around trees, shrubs, and borders, we recommend a layer 7–10cm deep. For paths and walkways, 10–15cm gives good coverage and a firm surface. For play areas, safety standards require a minimum depth of 30cm under climbing equipment. In all cases, keep chippings a few centimetres clear of tree trunks and plant stems to prevent rot.
