Hedge & Shrub Maintenance

Commercial-scale hedge and shrub maintenance for estates, councils, and property managers.

Commercial Hedge and Shrub Maintenance

Well-maintained hedges and shrubs are one of the most visible indicators of how a commercial site is managed. Overgrown boundaries, leggy shrubs, and neglected communal planting make a poor impression on tenants, visitors, and the public — and can create real problems including obstructed sightlines, encroachment onto footpaths, and neighbour disputes.

Gem Tree Management provides scheduled hedge and shrub maintenance for commercial clients across Hertfordshire and North London. We work with housing associations, property management companies, local authorities, schools, care homes, and private estates to keep grounds looking professional all year round. Ongoing contracts include country estates and portfolios of apartment blocks across our service area.

What Our Service Covers

Formal Hedge Maintenance

Formal hedges — privet, box, yew, beech, hornbeam, and laurel — require precise, regular cutting to maintain clean lines and dense growth. We use professional hedge trimmers and hand shears to achieve a crisp finish, cutting to the correct profile to ensure the base stays wider than the top. This promotes even light distribution and prevents the bare, leggy bases that result from poor cutting technique. We maintain formal yew hedging on private estates and clipped beech boundaries across conservation-area homes in our service area.

Native and Mixed Hedgerows

Native hedgerows of hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, and hazel need a different approach. These are typically managed on an annual or biennial cutting cycle, and we can lay or coppice sections that have become overgrown. Proper management of native hedgerows supports biodiversity — an increasingly important consideration for councils and housing associations meeting environmental targets.

Ornamental Shrub Beds

Communal shrub beds on housing estates, around office buildings, and in public spaces need seasonal attention to keep them looking tidy and prevent overcrowding. Our maintenance visits include:

  • Pruning — cutting back overgrown and misshapen shrubs to maintain form and encourage healthy growth
  • Dead-heading — removing spent flowers from flowering shrubs to prolong display
  • Thinning — removing congested growth to improve air circulation and reduce disease
  • Weed suppression — clearing weeds from beds and applying bark mulch to suppress regrowth
  • Replacement planting — removing dead or failing plants and replacing with appropriate species

Boundary Management

Boundary hedges that encroach on neighbouring properties, overhang footpaths, or obstruct highway sightlines create liability risks. We manage boundaries proactively, keeping growth within your site limits and maintaining clear sightlines at junctions and access points. For housing associations, this reduces complaints and avoids enforcement action from the local authority. For single-property jobs, homeowners can also use our domestic hedge trimming service on the same quality standards.

Scheduled Maintenance Contracts

The most cost-effective way to manage hedges and shrubs across a property portfolio is through a scheduled maintenance contract. We offer flexible contract arrangements tailored to your sites, your budget, and the standard of appearance you need to maintain.

How Our Contracts Work

1. Site survey — we visit every site in your portfolio and assess all hedges, shrubs, and planting. We note species, condition, size, and any remedial work needed.

2. Maintenance schedule — we design a cutting and pruning calendar for each site, specifying which hedges are cut on which visit and what shrub work is carried out through the season.

3. Fixed pricing — you receive an annual price for the full programme, broken down by site and by visit. No surprises, no variation claims for routine work.

4. Programmed visits — our crews visit each site on the agreed schedule. We notify your site manager or property officer before each visit and confirm completion afterwards.

5. Condition reporting — after each visit, we report on any issues found: hedge disease, storm damage, boundary encroachment, or areas needing additional attention outside the standard programme.

What You Get

  • Consistent standards across all your sites — the same team, the same approach, the same quality
  • One point of contact for scheduling, reporting, and invoicing
  • Consolidated invoicing — monthly or quarterly, however suits your accounts process
  • Priority scheduling — contract clients take precedence over ad-hoc work
  • Reactive call-out availability — if a hedge or shrub issue arises between scheduled visits, we respond quickly

Flail Cutting for Large-Scale Hedges

For long runs of boundary hedging, rural hedgerows, and roadside vegetation, hand cutting is not practical or cost-effective. We provide tractor-mounted and excavator-mounted flail cutting for large-scale hedge management.

Flail cutting is suited to:

  • Estate boundaries — miles of mixed hedgerow on country estates and parkland
  • Highway hedges — roadside vegetation management for councils and landowners
  • Agricultural boundaries — field hedges managed on annual or biennial cycles
  • Development site perimeters — keeping boundary vegetation under control during long build programmes, often alongside full site clearance on the same project

We currently run a flail cutting round for council-owned roadside hedges across parts of Barnet through the autumn and winter months.

We schedule flail work outside bird nesting season (September to February) wherever possible. Where work within nesting season is unavoidable, we carry out nesting bird checks in advance and comply with all Wildlife and Countryside Act requirements.

Seasonal Programme

Effective hedge and shrub maintenance follows a seasonal rhythm. Our standard annual programme includes:

Spring (March–May)

  • First formal hedge cut of the year once risk of hard frost has passed
  • Spring pruning of flowering shrubs after blooming
  • Weed clearance and fresh mulch application to shrub beds
  • Assessment of winter damage and remedial pruning

Summer (June–August)

  • Second formal hedge cut to maintain shape through the growing season
  • Dead-heading flowering shrubs
  • Watering and aftercare for any new planting
  • Weed control in shrub beds

Autumn (September–November)

  • Final hedge cut of the season
  • Hard pruning of deciduous shrubs as they enter dormancy
  • Leaf clearance from shrub beds and hedge bases
  • Flail cutting of rural hedgerows

Winter (December–February)

  • Renovation pruning of overgrown hedges and shrubs
  • Coppicing and laying of native hedgerows
  • Planting of new hedging and replacement shrubs
  • Planning and pricing for the coming year's programme

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do commercial hedges need cutting?
Most formal hedges need cutting two to three times per year to maintain a neat appearance — typically in late spring, midsummer, and early autumn. Fast-growing species like privet and Leylandii may need a fourth cut. Informal or native hedgerows usually require one or two cuts annually. We design a cutting schedule around your specific hedge species and the standard of appearance you need to maintain.
Can you maintain hedges on multiple sites under one contract?
Yes, this is how most of our commercial hedge contracts work. We manage hedge maintenance across portfolios of properties for housing associations, property managers, and local authorities. A single contract covers all sites with a consistent schedule, consistent standards, and one point of contact for reporting and invoicing.
What is flail cutting and when is it used?
Flail cutting uses a tractor-mounted or excavator-mounted flail head to cut large hedges quickly and cost-effectively. It is suited to long boundary hedges, rural hedgerows, and roadside vegetation where a formal finish is not required. For ornamental hedges on estates or in public-facing areas, we use hand tools and hedge trimmers to achieve a cleaner cut. We use the right method for each hedge type on your site.
Do you handle hedge waste removal?
Yes, all clippings and arisings are removed from site as standard on every visit. We chip material on site where practical and remove it to licensed green waste facilities. For large sites with composting areas, we can leave chipped material on site for your grounds team to use as mulch — whichever approach works best for you.
Can you take over maintenance from our current contractor mid-contract?
We are happy to take on hedge maintenance at any point in the year. We begin with a site survey to assess the current condition of all hedges, note any remedial work needed, and agree a schedule going forward. If hedges have been neglected or cut poorly, we can carry out restorative pruning to bring them back to a good standard before moving to a regular maintenance cycle.
