Commercial Stump Grinding

Large-scale stump removal for development sites and commercial properties.

Commercial-Grade Stump Grinding

Stumps left behind after tree removal create obstacles for construction, landscaping, and site management. On development sites, they prevent foundation excavation, interfere with service runs, and obstruct earthworks. On managed estates and commercial grounds, they are trip hazards and maintenance headaches.

Our commercial stump grinding service is built for projects where domestic equipment is not up to the job. We operate tracked, self-propelled grinders with cutting wheels up to 900mm wide, capable of processing stumps of any size — from small ornamental tree bases to the root plates of century-old oaks and beeches. Recent projects have included retail-park stump clearances and processing the remains of mature trees on care-home sites.

Equipment for Every Scale of Project

We maintain a fleet of stump grinders so we can match the right machine to your site:

Tracked Stump Grinders

Our primary machines for commercial work. Self-propelled tracked units weigh between 2 and 4 tonnes and can grind stumps up to 1.5 metres in diameter without repositioning. The tracked chassis provides stability on uneven ground and minimises turf damage compared with wheeled alternatives. These machines pass through standard site gates and can work on gradients.

Narrow-Access Grinders

For stumps in confined spaces — between buildings, in courtyards, or behind restricted gateways — we use compact pedestrian-operated grinders that fit through openings as narrow as 750mm. These are smaller but still handle stumps up to 600mm in diameter.

Excavator-Mounted Heads

On large clearance projects where dozens of stumps need removing across an open site, an excavator-mounted grinding head is the most efficient option. This approach combines stump removal with site grading, reducing the number of separate operations and overall project time.

Development Site Preparation

Developers and main contractors call us in after tree removal to prepare sites for the next phase of construction. Our work typically includes:

  • Grinding stumps to specified depth — coordinated with your ground engineer's requirements for foundation depth, slab formation, or road construction layers
  • Root removal within building footprints — tracing and grinding major roots that extend beyond the stump location into areas where they would conflict with foundations, drainage, or services
  • Grinding material removal — loading and removing all grindings from site, leaving clean voids ready for backfilling with engineered fill material
  • Level surveying — confirming the finished depth of each stump void against the required formation level

We work to programmes set by the main contractor and coordinate with other trades on site. Our operators hold CSCS cards and are accustomed to working within CDM-managed site environments. Stump grinding is often the tidy-up phase after large-scale tree removal or full site clearance, and we aim to keep the same crews on the job from felling through to finished formation.

Multi-Stump Projects

Whether it is 5 stumps on a single development plot or 200 across a housing estate, we approach multi-stump projects with a clear programme:

1. Site survey — we visit the site, measure and record every stump (species, diameter, location), note access constraints and underground services
2. Method statement — we produce a site-specific method statement covering equipment selection, grinding depth, waste management, and coordination with other site activities
3. Mobilisation — we schedule the works to fit your construction programme, with the right machine for the volume and size of stumps involved
4. Completion and sign-off — each stump location is checked against the specification and signed off before we demobilise

For ongoing contracts — such as housing associations, councils, or property management companies with a rolling programme of tree removals — we offer fixed-rate agreements based on stump size bands, giving you cost certainty and a single call to arrange each job. We run rolling stump programmes for estates across our service area.

Site Remediation After Grinding

Stump grinding leaves a void filled with loose wood chip and soil. Depending on the end use, the next step varies:

  • Construction sites: we remove all grindings and the void is backfilled with compacted Type 1 or other specified material by the groundworks contractor
  • Landscaped areas: grindings can be left in place and topped with soil, then turfed or planted. The wood chip decomposes over 1–2 years and may cause temporary nitrogen depletion in the soil, so we recommend adding a nitrogen-rich fertiliser when replanting
  • Hard surfaces (car parks, paths): full removal of grindings is essential, followed by proper compaction and sub-base construction to prevent future settlement

We advise on the appropriate approach during the quoting stage and include waste removal in our price when the site requires it.

Safety and Compliance

Stump grinding on commercial sites carries specific risks: underground services, site traffic, other trades working nearby, and public access on occupied sites. Every project receives a site-specific risk assessment, and our operators are trained in:

  • CAT and Genny service detection
  • CSCS site safety
  • NPTC/City & Guilds stump grinder operation
  • Manual handling and vibration awareness

We carry public liability insurance and can provide project-specific method statements, risk assessments, and insurance documentation for your principal contractor's approval.

Areas We Cover

We provide commercial stump grinding services across our full 30-mile service area from our base in Watford, covering Rickmansworth, Harrow, St Albans, Hemel Hempstead, Barnet, and all surrounding areas in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and North London.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep can you grind stumps for construction sites?
Our commercial stump grinders can remove stumps and major lateral roots to a depth of 600mm (24 inches) below ground level as standard. Where deeper excavation is required — for example, where foundations or services will run through the stump location — we can grind to depths of up to 1 metre. We confirm the required depth with your contractor or engineer before starting work.
How many stumps can you remove in a day?
With our largest tracked grinder, we typically process 15–30 medium stumps (300–600mm diameter) per day, depending on species, root spread, and access conditions. Larger stumps over 1 metre in diameter take longer individually. We provide a realistic programme when quoting multi-stump projects so you can plan around our works.
Can you grind stumps near underground services?
Yes, but this requires careful planning. Before any commercial grinding project, we conduct a full services check using CAT and Genny detection equipment and review utility plans for the site. Where services run within the grinding zone, we adjust depth, use smaller equipment, or hand-dig to expose the service before grinding around it. Safety is non-negotiable.
What happens to the grindings?
Stump grinding produces a large volume of wood chip and soil mixture — typically 3 to 5 times the volume of the original stump. On development sites, we usually remove all grindings from site so the area is ready for the next phase of construction. Alternatively, they can be spread on site as mulch for landscaped areas. We confirm the approach during the quoting stage.
Do you remove the roots as well as the stump?
The grinder removes the main root plate and any major lateral roots within the grinding zone. Surface roots extending beyond this area can be traced and ground separately if required. For construction sites, we typically grind all roots within the footprint of the proposed structure or hard surface. Complete root system removal across the entire site is not usually necessary or practical.
