Seasoned Firewood From Local Tree Surgery

There's something deeply satisfying about burning wood that came from a tree just a few miles from your home. Every tree we fell across Hertfordshire and North London produces timber — and the best of that timber becomes firewood for our customers across the wider service area.

We've been supplying firewood to homes across our service area for over 20 years. Because we source all our wood directly from our tree felling operations, we can offer high-quality hardwood logs at prices that beat most firewood merchants — with the added benefit of knowing exactly where your fuel came from. Regular customers include homes and villages across our service area.

Our Firewood

Species

We supply exclusively hardwood logs. The most common species from our tree work are:

  • Oak — the gold standard of firewood. Dense, long-burning, and produces sustained, high heat. Needs 18–24 months of seasoning due to its density, but worth the wait.
  • Ash — widely regarded as the best all-round firewood. Burns well even with relatively high moisture content, seasons quickly (12–18 months), and produces a steady, hot flame with minimal spitting.
  • Beech — excellent heat output with a clean, bright flame. Burns slightly faster than oak but produces wonderful, long-lasting embers. Needs 12–18 months of seasoning.
  • Birch — lights easily and burns with an attractive, lively flame. Good heat output but burns faster than oak or ash, so best mixed with denser species. Pleasant, mild scent. Seasons in 12 months.
  • Sycamore — good general-purpose firewood with moderate heat output. Burns cleanly and seasons relatively quickly. Often available in large quantities from our urban tree work.

We don't supply softwood (pine, spruce, larch) for firewood. Softwoods burn fast, produce less heat per volume, and generate more creosote — increasing the risk of chimney fires.

Seasoned Logs

Our standard offering. Timber from our tree work is cut to length, split, and stacked in our yard where it air-dries for a minimum of 12 months — longer for dense species like oak. By the time it reaches you, the moisture content is below 20%, meeting the legal requirements for domestic burning.

We season our logs in open-sided bays that allow good airflow while protecting against rain. The Hertfordshire climate, with its mix of wind and moderate rainfall, is well-suited to air-drying hardwood. The smaller branchwood that can't be turned into logs goes through our chipper to become wood chippings — nothing is wasted.

Kiln-Dried Logs

For customers who want the best possible performance — or who live in a Smoke Control Area — we offer kiln-dried logs. These are dried in a controlled kiln at sustained high temperatures, reducing moisture content to around 10–15%.

Kiln-dried logs offer several advantages over air-dried:

  • Higher heat output — less energy is wasted evaporating moisture
  • Easier to light — catch flame quickly and establish a fire faster
  • Less smoke — cleaner burning with minimal visible smoke
  • Less creosote — reduces chimney deposits and the associated fire risk
  • Compliant with Smoke Control Areas — meets the "Ready to Burn" standard required under the Environment Act 2021

Log Sizes

We supply logs in standard lengths to suit most wood burners, multi-fuel stoves, and open fires:

  • 10-inch (25cm) — the most popular size, fits the majority of domestic stoves
  • 12-inch (30cm) — suitable for larger stoves and open fires
  • Custom lengths — available on request for non-standard fire openings

All logs are split to a manageable size for easy handling and stacking. We split to approximately 10–15cm across, which allows good airflow during storage and ensures they fit through stove doors without further splitting.

Storage Tips

Proper storage is essential to keep your firewood in good condition:

  • Keep it off the ground — store logs on a pallet, raised platform, or in a purpose-built log store to prevent moisture wicking up from below
  • Cover the top, not the sides — a roof or tarpaulin over the top keeps rain off, but leave the sides open for airflow. Fully enclosing seasoned wood traps moisture and can cause mould
  • Stack loosely — resist the temptation to pack logs tightly. Air circulation between logs is essential for maintaining low moisture content
  • Store near the house — you're far more likely to light a fire if you don't have to trek to the bottom of the garden in the rain
  • Bring logs indoors 24 hours before burning — allowing them to reach room temperature improves combustion and reduces condensation in the flue

Ordering and Delivery

We sell firewood by the cubic metre or by the bulk bag:

  • Bulk bags — approximately 0.7 cubic metres of stacked logs per bag. Easy to store and move around your garden.
  • Loose loads — delivered by tipper truck for larger orders. We can tip on your driveway or hardstanding.
  • Stacking service — we'll stack logs in your log store or wherever you'd like them for an additional charge.

Delivery is included within our standard service area. We recommend ordering early — stock of well-seasoned logs is highest in late summer and autumn, and we often sell out of kiln-dried logs by mid-winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What species of wood do you sell as firewood?
We primarily supply hardwood logs — oak, ash, beech, birch, and sycamore are the most common species from our tree work. All of these produce excellent heat output and burn well once properly seasoned. Ash is particularly popular as it has a lower moisture content even when freshly felled, meaning it seasons faster than other hardwoods. We don't supply softwood for firewood.
What's the difference between seasoned and kiln-dried logs?
Seasoned logs have been air-dried for 12–24 months until their moisture content drops below 20%. Kiln-dried logs are dried in a controlled kiln over several days, bringing moisture content down to around 10–15%. Kiln-dried logs light more easily, burn hotter, and produce less smoke and creosote — they're the better option for wood burners and open fires, and they're required by law in Smoke Control Areas under the Environment Act 2021.
How much firewood do I need for the winter?
For a household using a wood burner as a primary heat source, you'll typically get through 3–4 cubic metres of seasoned hardwood logs over a winter (October–March). For occasional evening fires, 1–2 cubic metres is usually sufficient. We recommend ordering in late summer or early autumn to ensure you're stocked up before the cold arrives.
Do you deliver firewood?
Yes. We deliver across our full service area using transit vans or tipper trucks depending on the order size. Logs are delivered in bulk bags or loose-tipped depending on your preference and access. We can stack logs in your store or log shed for an additional charge if required. Delivery is included in the price for orders within our standard service area.
Can I burn any firewood in a Smoke Control Area?
In a Smoke Control Area, you can only burn wood that is certified as 'Ready to Burn' — meaning it has a moisture content below 20%. Our kiln-dried logs meet this standard. The regulations changed under the Environment Act 2021 and apply to all wood sold in volumes under 2 cubic metres. We supply compliant logs and can advise on which of our products is suitable for your setup.
