Tree Pruning
Expert pruning to maintain tree health, shape, and safety for domestic properties.
Professional Tree Pruning Services
Well-maintained trees are an asset to any property. They provide shade, privacy, and character — but left unchecked, they can outgrow their space, block light, interfere with structures, and become a safety risk. Professional pruning keeps your trees healthy, attractive, and under control.
Our team has been pruning trees across Hertfordshire and North London for over 20 years. We understand the biology behind every cut we make, ensuring your trees respond well to the work and continue to thrive for decades to come. In any given month we might be carrying out a crown reduction on a veteran oak, thinning limes shading a back garden, or deadwooding mature beech on a private estate.
Types of Tree Pruning
Different situations call for different pruning techniques. We carry out all forms of arboricultural pruning to BS 3998 standards.
Crown Reduction
Crown reduction decreases the overall size of the tree's canopy by shortening branches back to suitable growth points. This is the most common form of pruning for trees that have outgrown their space — we carry out reductions most weeks on mature oaks, limes and sycamores in leafy streets across our service area. Unlike topping — which cuts branches to arbitrary points and causes serious damage — crown reduction maintains the tree's natural shape while bringing it down to a more manageable size. Reductions are typically specified as a percentage, with most trees responding well to a 20–30% reduction. For commercial sites or multi-tree projects, see our dedicated crown reduction and thinning service.
Crown Thinning
Crown thinning removes a proportion of the smaller, secondary branches throughout the canopy to allow more light through without changing the overall shape or size of the tree. This is particularly useful for trees that cast heavy shade over gardens, patios, or rooms in the house. A 20–30% thin is usually sufficient to make a noticeable difference to light levels.
Crown Lifting
Crown lifting removes the lower branches to increase the clearance beneath the tree. This is commonly needed to clear overhanging paths, driveways, garden areas, or to improve sightlines. For trees adjacent to public highways, there are legal minimum clearances of 2.5m over footpaths and 5.2m over roads.
Deadwooding
Dead branches are a natural part of a tree's lifecycle, but they can pose a serious hazard when they drop without warning. Deadwooding removes all dead, dying, and diseased branches from the canopy. This is particularly important for trees that overhang areas where people walk, sit, or park. Deadwood removal can be carried out at any time of year without affecting the tree.
Formative Pruning
Young trees benefit enormously from early, formative pruning. By removing competing leaders, crossing branches, and poorly positioned growth while the tree is young, we can guide its development into a strong, well-balanced structure. This reduces the need for heavy corrective work later in the tree's life and results in a much healthier, more attractive specimen.
What's Included
Every tree pruning job includes:
- Free site visit and written quote — we assess your trees in person and discuss exactly what work is needed
- TPO and conservation area checks — we verify the status of your trees and handle any council applications required
- Work carried out to BS 3998 — the British Standard for tree work, ensuring best practice at every stage
- Full waste removal — all branchwood and debris is cleared from site on the same day
- Site cleanup — we leave your garden as we found it, raking up leaves and sawdust
Why Proper Pruning Matters
Trees are living organisms that respond to pruning cuts in specific ways. Every cut triggers a biological response — the tree seals the wound by growing specialised tissue over it. When cuts are made correctly, at the right position and angle, the tree can seal them quickly and efficiently. When cuts are made badly — too close to the trunk, too far from it, or at the wrong angle — the tree struggles to seal the wound, leaving it vulnerable to decay and disease.
This is why tree pruning should always be carried out by qualified arborists. Our team holds NPTC/City & Guilds qualifications in tree surgery and has the hands-on experience to make the right decisions for every tree. Where trees have outgrown their space beyond what pruning can reasonably manage, we may recommend tree felling or ongoing pollarding as a more appropriate long-term approach.
Safety and Insurance
All pruning work is carried out by fully qualified tree surgeons using professional climbing equipment and rigging techniques. We carry public liability insurance and complete a full risk assessment before every job. Our team works to all current Health and Safety Executive guidelines for work at height and chainsaw operations.
